As one of the few surgeons in the United States who performs gender affirming surgeries, it’s important to Dr. Hanna to set a model standard for others following in his footsteps. He realizes that gender affirming surgery can have life-changing effects on his patients, and he dedicates his entire practice to the needs of the Transgender and Non-Binary (TGNB) community. Supporting these communities is the sole focus of his work, as these groups have been underserved by transgender surgeons for decades. His dedication to excellence and his commitment to perfection ensures a comprehensive, patient-centric approach for everyone who comes to our clinic.
Dr. Hanna’s journey to becoming a premier gender reassignment surgeon involved years of study, internships, residencies, and fellowships. After his doctorate work with the University of New England, he was hand-picked for a fellowship in Gender Affirming Surgery. Here, he discovered a program that was specifically designed to address the medical needs of patients with gender dysphoria. It fully examined all elements of the perioperative period in intimate detail, a critical window for successful affirmation procedures.
With his fellowship complete, Dr. Hanna chose to expand his expertise with additional training in Europe. Under Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic, a highly respected leader in urogenital reconstructive surgery, Dr. Hanna learned advanced surgery techniques at the Medical School of Belgrade University. Using this specialized training, he accepts patients interested in complex reconstruction of their existing anatomy to reflect their preferred gender identity.
Dr. Hanna completed his undergraduate studies at Worcester State University in Massachusetts and earned his Master in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, currently known as Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. He chose this field because it combines biology and medicine along with laboratory and discovery research to provide more comprehensive basic education for gender reassignment surgeons.
Determined to become a transgender surgeon, Dr. Hanna then completed his doctorate at the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine. With a robust LGBTQ curriculum for medical students, this school fostered compassion and empathy for those in the transgender and non-binary community. Dr. Hanna graduated summa cum laude with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a distinct branch of medicine that takes a whole-person approach to hands-on care.
Dr. Hanna completed an internship in general surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital, the first academic medical center in the Philadelphia region to offer a transgender surgical program. He then completed a residency in urology at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Hanna has since been certified by The American Board of Urology meaning his practice adheres to the Board’s high standards of care so patients can feel confident choosing him.
He later founded the Hanna Gender Center as a transgender surgeon in 2021. Here, we exclusively serve trans men, trans women, and non-binary individuals on their path to becoming who they were always meant to be.
In addition to his work as a transgender surgeon, Dr. Hanna also enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2005. He served as an infantryman, and later, as a tactical intelligence officer with the 223rd Military Intelligence Company. He more recently served as the Battalion Surgeon for 1-181st Infantry in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and is currently still posted within the Army National Guard.
Today, Dr. Hanna maintains his connections with the military community through his work as a medical advisor with SPARTA. This organization allows him to advocate on behalf of transgender and non-binary individuals within the military.
