Hanna Gender Center

Nullification Surgery

If you have an image in your mind of what you want your body to look like, our team is here to help you achieve it. We offer numerous non-binary surgeries, including genital nullification, that could help you reach your goals. Dr. Hanna is an experienced gender-affirming surgeon, having performed a high volume of nullification surgeries over the years. There is no template for nullification surgeries as each patient’s anatomy and desires are unique, but with this experience, Dr. Hanna will provide the results you envisioned. With the removal of all genital tissue, we create a relatively smooth genital area with a soft transition from the lower abdomen to the groin. We will also shorten your urethra, along with other patient-specific additions. Learn more about our nullification surgery options for trans and non-binary patients here.

Patient-Centric Care

Our entire practice is centered around your needs as a patient, so everything we do can be modified to match your vision. Many patients choose to personalize our genital nullification surgery to meet their needs or combine it with other non-binary surgeries, like Penectomy, Non-Binary Chest Surgery, or Zero Depth Vaginoplasty. When you schedule your consultation with Dr. Dany Hanna, we can discuss everything you want for your future body to ensure the best possible results.

Nullification Surgery Techniques

There are many factors that could affect your genital nullification, including your assigned gender at birth. If you were born with a uterus, we require a total hysterectomy prior to your procedure. We also require pre-operative letters clarifying your mental health status and any hormone regimens you may be on.

It’s important to find a surgeon who performs a high volume of genital reconstruction on transitioning patients since these procedures are irreversible. As an American Board of Urology certified urologist and a fellowship-trained gender-affirming surgeon, Dr. Hanna exclusively provides surgical care for transgender and non-binary patients, as well as those with genital dysphoria.

We strive to provide the highest level of care as put forth by WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) standards. Please discuss your comprehensive plan and final goals with our team to ensure everyone is on the same page regarding your health. Reach out to us today for your consultation with Dr. Dany Hanna.

What Can You Expect Before Nullification Surgery?

When it comes to genital dysphoria surgeries, the entire process can take years. Patients need to be living as their identified gender, obtain mental health care and referrals, and get approval from their insurance providers. Once patients are finally approved and ready for genital nullification, schedule an appointment with our team for a consultation.

At Hanna Gender Center, we focus on your needs as a patient and your desires as a non-binary individual. We guide all our patients through each step of the preparation process with clear instructions and recommendations. Our team will provide the discharge instructions to patients in advance to best prepare.

What Can You Expect After Nullification Surgery?

After a nullification procedure, patients will have significant recovery time while the pain and swelling dissipate and the area heals. The discharge papers will provide specific instructions for follow-ups, long-term care, and everyday maintenance to ensure the best possible results.

Recovery times may vary, but patients can expect 6 to 8 weeks of healing, up to four weeks of limited movement, and restrictions on heavy lifting and strenuous activity for several months.

How Might Nullification Benefit LGBTQ Patients?

For those individuals that feel their non-binary identity should be reflected with genital nullification, this type of surgery can provide affirmation and support for how they see themselves. After nullification surgery, many non-binary individuals see an improvement in their mental health.
